Milford Ice's Hockey Basics and Initiation Program (Learn to Play) are designed to introduce beginners to the sport of hockey. Hockey Basics gets the kids to learn the basics of skating. If they are new to skating , they need to complete this program prior to enrolling in our Initiation Program.
In our Initiation Program, boys and girls ages 4 and up are introduced to the basic skills of skating, puck control, passing and shooting. Children learn by participating in practice drills and informal scrimmages that are directed by USA Hockey certified instructors who are on the ice at all times. The goal of the program is to ensure that the child’s introduction to hockey is a positive experience. Team concepts are learned as well as player skills. All while gaining confidence and having fun.
During each session, participants are divided into different skill stations. The groups participate in drills while always leaving time for on-ice games at the end of the session.
As the player’s skills grow they will be ready to move into organized team play in our Advanced Hockey Skills program (House League) where they learn and practice concepts of competitive team play, sportsmanship, respect for teammates, coaches and officials. They can also try-out for a travel team with Southern Connecticut Youth Hockey which plays out of Milford Ice. For further information on their travel teams, go to scyhstars.org.
